Butterick 5949 Dress

In 2012 I was living down the Gold Coast in a suburb that couldn’t access the internet, so to entertain myself I borrowed a sewing machine off my mum. Looking back, this was probably one of the best things I did because I ended up with a hobby and skill that I just can’t get enough of. Over the years I’ve also learnt to appreciate how valuable having your own hobbies and interests are. I sew because I love everything that I get from it. Being able to create something that I you love, at a very little expense, is pretty damn amazing. Plus, I also get to chill at home with my pug furbabies.

This dress pattern is also one of my ‘oldie but goodie’ patterns that I’ve pulled out of the cupboard for my own 2019 “Me Making” challenge. I’ve also created a slim fitting skirt version using some blue Spoonflower fabric.

Pattern: Butterick 5949 Dress
Description: Lined dress has close-fitting, pleated, bias front bodice variations, waistband, and invisible back zipper.
Fabric used: Spotlight Floral Broadcloth

I adore this sewing pattern because it’s such a classic, girlie design, especially when you pair it with some really bright, floral fabric. Blue and green are also two of my favourite dress colours to wear, I just can’t get enough 🙂

This dress has wide shoulders, almost making it look like they are shoulder pads. It also includes pleats in the top front neckline and sleeve which makes it really unique and elegant (apologies, my hair probably hides them in this photo).

I also lined my dress with a matching green cotton lining to give it a bit more stability. I’ll line most dresses where I can because I feel that it finishes it so much nicer, especially when the fabric is soft, see-through or very light.

My little pug girl Bella, is almost 10 years old! It’s so adorable that she’s growing little grey hairs but otherwise you would still think she’s a puppy with how cheeky she is. She always gets her own way because I just can’t resist that cute little puggy face.

What inspires you to sew? Hopefully seeing some dress pattern made up will be more than enough to help you on your journey!

Happy Sewing!!

I’m actually thinking of making this one again now, I really loved the skirt version. 😊
I hope your recovery goes okay and you’re back to sewing soon! Sounds like a great time to put all your projects together in preparation. Hope you feel better and rest up in the mean time Xx
